Yes it's the guide. Explaining it will be painful yet 'Mostly Harmless' . It's a Radio series; a trilogy of five books by the late Douglas Adams.
You must read it to understand and then perhaps you will only then know just a little. For axample that Elvis (Presley) is alive at 'The Restaurant at the end of the Universe' and that you may always need a towel wherever you go and it's not so bad out there and you may even discover "the meaning of Liff".
Many questions may pop up and 42 seems to be a solution to one of the biggest, so hey, why can't it be answer to any of my questions too!
